Beng Mealea Temple
Beng Mealea is a sprawling, overgrown temple complex located approximately 40 kilometers east of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Built in the early 12th century under King Suryavarman II, the same ruler who commissioned Angkor Wat, Beng Mealea is a prime example of Khmer architecture. The temple is constructed primarily of sandstone and features a similar design to Angkor Wat, with a central sanctuary surrounded by galleries and courtyards. However, unlike its more famous counterpart, Beng Mealea has been largely reclaimed by the jungle, with massive roots and vines intertwining through the ruins. This gives it a mysterious, almost magical atmosphere that attracts adventurous travelers and photographers. Despite its partially collapsed state and the encroaching vegetation, Beng Mealea retains much of its original grandeur and intricate carvings, offering a glimpse into the ancient Khmer Empire’s architectural and artistic prowess.
